A. The Acorn is published by Teri Jo Nicholson, a resident who graciously donates hundreds of hours each year putting together all the elements of a professional newsletter. The view past newsletters, click here.

A. The Acorn is printed by Gill Daoust of Digital Prepress Solutions. Gill is a resident of Candlelight Oaks who has donated many hours and the use of his professional resources.
Q.How do I submit an article or advertisement for the Acorn? <back>
A. To submit an article or ad for the Acorn, simply send e-mail to Teri JO Nicholson <terijo@houston.rr.com> Articles are published on a space availability basis, and the editor or board of directors reserves the right to edit the content of any article for accuracy, content, and grammar.

Q. What should I do if I see a crime in progress? <back>
A. Call 911. Then call our neighborhood security line @ 713-858-8020 we may be able to provide assistance.
Q. What should I do if I see suspicious activity? <back>
A. Report the activity by completing our online incident report form and call our neighborhood Security Service Line @ 713-858-8020 our officers may be able to provide immediate assistance while on neighborhood patrols.
Q. What kinds of activities should be considered suspicious? <back>
A. Suspicious activity is any activity that is imagined to exist or be true, likely, or probable. If you have suspicions, call our neighborhood Security Service Line @ 713-858-8020.
Q. How do I request my home to be placed on vacation watch? <back>
A. Complete the online vacation watch form or call our neighborhood Security Service Line @ 713-858-8020. While on vacation our HPD patrol officers will make occasional drive by and physical checks of your property. Any resident may place their home on vacation watch.
Q. How do I join Neighborhood Watch or Citizens Patrol? <back>
A. Contact the Board of Directors - Security Chair.
Q. How much time does volunteering require? <back>
A. In general, as much or as little as you prefer. We require 1 hour up front to give you a hands-on orientation then we request that you log 1 patrol hour per month and participate in some of our meetings throughout the year.
Q. What activities are available for resident participation? <back>
A. Candlelight Oaks residents can participate in a variety of activities designed to increase community safety and awareness. Primarily resident volunteers choose activities from either Citizens Patrol or Neighborhood Watch, in addition Candlelight Oaks residents are asked to participate in the Check Six program. Q. Who answers the security phone @ 713-858-8020? <back>
A. Currently the phone is answered by our HPD officers while patrolling. If you are asked to leave a voice mail, your call will be answered by the next officer on patrol during NORMAL hours. It is important to note that many patrols are scheduled for late at night and you may not receive a call the next day. If you have an emergency dial 911. You can also contact HPD non-emergency at 713-884-3131.

A. The pool is open during the summer months; it open on Memorial Day and closes on the 1st day of school. Hours are as follow:
- Monday: Closed (for cleaning)
- Tuesday - Thursday: Noon - 8pm
- Friday: Noon - 10pm
- Saturday: Noon - 9pm
Q. Is there a fee associated with the use of the pool? <back>
A. Yes. The fee is $75 for the season. This money will be used to pay the salaries of lifeguards and to clean the pool every Monday. You can download a pool application form here.

A. This website is now maintained primarily by Marilyn Harper.
Q. How do I report a bad link, error, or make a suggestion? <back>
A. Send all comments to webmaster@candlelightoaks.org. Please be as specific as possible when describing any broken links or errors so that we may locate and correct them as soon as possible.
Q. Why is the community section reserved for residents only? <back>
A. Our community section contains information relevant only to residents of the community. If you have questions about our community and need answers not found on our website, send e-mail to webmaster@candlelightoaks.org.
Q. How do I get an account for the community section? <back>
A. Getting an account is easy, simply point your mouse to the community menu, and then choose the Join & Volunteer link. Complete the form and your account information will be e-mailed to you.
Q. What are the terms of use for the website? <back>
A. Registration to this community site is free! We do insist that you abide by the rules and policies detailed below. The administrators and moderators of candlelightoaks.org have the right to remove, edit, move or close any posting, message, or thread for any reason.
When posting messages to the bulletin board, keep the following in mind:

Do not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violate any laws.

Messages of a personal nature, attacks on others, and FLAMING will not be tolerated.

If you do not have anything constructive to say in the message then don't post it. Commenting or responding to others' points of view and opinions is appropriate, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully ... without insult and personal attack. Differing opinions is one of the things that make our neighborhood great!

| Deed Restrictions |

Q. What are the basic deed restrictions? <back>
A. Candlelight Oaks is comprised of four different sections and consequently has four sets of deed restrictions. They are all basically the same with very few differences. Listed below are some of the more common deed restrictions that should be kept in mind in keeping the neighborhood a peaceful and harmonious place to live.
- Land - Use and Building Type: Lots must be used for single-family residential purposes - no hospitals, clinics, duplex houses, apartment houses, boarding houses, hotels and commercial and professional uses. Buildings other than one single-family dwelling can not exceed two stories in height and a private garage for not more than three cars are permitted.
- Dwelling Size and Construction: The livable area of each main residential structure, exclusive of open or screened porches, stoops, open terraces, garages, or detached servant quarters shall not be less than 2,000 square feet.
- Building Location: No building shall be located on any lot nearer to the front lot line or nearer to the side street line than the minimum building setback lines shown on the recorded plat.
- Lot Area and Width: No dwelling shall be erected or placed upon any building site containing less than 6,600 square feet in area or having a width of less than 60' at the front building set back line shown on the recorded plat.
- Nuisances: No noxious or offensive activity shall be permitted upon any lot, nor shall anything be done theron which may be or become an annoyance or nuisance to the neighborhood.
- Temporary Structures: No structure of a temporary character, trailer, basement, tent, shack, garage (except for living quarters contained therein for bona fide servants), barn or other outbuilding shall be used on any lot any time as a residence either temporarily or permanently.
- Vehicle Parking in Driveways and Streets: No boats, trailers, campers and/or mobile homes of any character may be permanently parked or stored on any driveway or street. Any such vehicle so parked or stored for a period of time in excess of 60 cumulative hours during any 72 hour period, shall be deemed to have been parked or stored in a permanent manner. Such vehicles may be parked and stored in garages. Motor vehicles, which are inoperative, or not in running order, may not be parked or stored on any driveway or street for any period of time in excess of 72 consecutive hours.
- Signs: No signs of any kind shall be displayed to the public view on any lot except one sign of not more than 5 square feet advertising the property for sale or rent.
- Fences: No cyclone or cyclone type (being a fence composed of wire and metal) fence may be erected on any lot and all fences located along the outer perimeter of any lot must be 6 foot in height and constructed of cedar wood.
- Livestock and Poultry: No animals, livestock, or poultry of any kind shall be raised, bred, or kept on any lot except that not more than 2 dogs, cats or other household pets may be kept provided that they are not kept, bred or maintained for any commercial purposes.
- Garbage and Refuse Disposal: No lot shall be used or maintained as a dumping ground for rubbish. Trash, garbage and other waste shall not be kept except in sanitary containers.
- Cutting Weeds and Drainage: Grass, vegetation and weeds on each lot shall be cut as often as may be necessary in order to maintain the same in a neat and attractive appearance. Likewise, all drainage ditches shall be maintained in the same manner and shall be unobstructed at all times.

Q. What do I have to do to get neighborhood approval for my project? <back>
A. Send and e-mail describing your project to deedrestrictions@candlelightoaks.org . Be sure to include your address, a description of the size and scope of the project, the type of materials you will use, and any other information that may be helpful. The committee will evaluate your request and contact you directly.

Q. How are board members elected, how many are there, and what is the board structure? <back>
A. Board members are elected by ballot, one ballot per household. Members serve 2 year terms and terms are staggered. There are nine members, 4 are up for election one year, 5 are up for election the next year. Each year, the board elects officers for President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Q. How do you address the board of directors? <back>
A. There are a couple of ways to address the board, first, send e-mail to any of the board members above, or you may attend an open meeting and discuss your topic with other neighbors and the board.
Q. Who manages the day to day business of the community? <back>
A. Candlelight Oaks Civic Club uses a property management company to handle many of the administrative tasks associated with neighborhood business.

A. Common areas and fences are maintained by volunteers. Our maintenance committee schedules and promotes workdays throughout the year to help maintain our neighborhood.

A. The neighborhood employs a landscaping company to keep our esplanades and common areas mowed, volunteers help plant new shrubs and floral and trim trees and shrubs.

A. Garbage on Thursdays / Recycle alternate Thursdays / Heavy Trash on the 3rd Friday of the month
Q. Are there facilities for dumping trash between garbage pickup? <back>
A. NOT for household garbage. However, the City of Houston provides facilities at 5565 Kirkpatrick, and 9200 Lawndale. These facilities accept all types of heavy trash, tires, and recyclables. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, except holidays. For more information go to the City of Houston's Department of Solid Waste Management. |
